Do I need to go to a Gun Smith?

Dear Gun Whisperer, I shoot a Semi-Automatic, and the slide doesn’t lock open when the magazine goes empty.  I thought maybe I had a defective magazine so I bought a new one but I have the same problem.  Do I need to go to a Gun Smith? Signed, Running on Empty Dear Running on Empty, Maybe, but before you go to your local gun guru, check your grip.  Is your thumb perhaps resting on the slide stop, thereby preventing it from engaging?  It doesn’t take much.  It is an easy check that won’t cost you anything.  If, after you are certain you aren’t the cause, then, yes, Read More >>

Gun Whisperer – You Have Questions, We Have Answers

Asking Questions Many new shooters look to more experienced shooters for advice and suggestions.  What if you don’t know anyone?  There are a lot of sources of information.  Talk to the people working at your local range, ask an instructor, or…send us your question!  Do you remember Dear Abby?  Welcome to Dear Gun Whisperer.  The guest bloggers on this site have lots of experience as shooters, instructors and…well, offering opinions.  If you have a question you can email and ask your question, then watch for your answer to appear in the gun blogs on Read More >>

Who should teach you to shoot?

You have made the decision that you want to try shooting.  Yeah!  Welcome, we are a friendly group.  But, who do you ask to help you navigate your entry into this world?  Your significant other?  Neighbor with 50 guns lovingly displayed who goes to the range once a year?  A friend who shoots at least once a month?  Do you send your kids to the neighbor who barely graduated high school for tutoring?  Do you send your child to the person who played piano 30 years ago and still has one collecting dust for lessons?  You probably would say NO, you would send them to someone who had the Read More >>

One if by Land, Two if by Sea, Three if by…Graveyard?

Zombie Apocalypse; it is everywhere!  Movies, video games, T-Shirts, shooting targets, ammo, even gun designs.  In May, 2011, the Center for Disease Control issues a Preparedness 101: Zombie Apocalypse blog.  The intent was to get people prepared for a natural or man-made disaster and offered tips as relevant to a hurricane as to a Zombie attack, perhaps more so, I have my doubts about a zombie free refugee camp. Why now?  IMHO the world is a scary place.  We have wars, threats against our nation, terrorist plots, the risk of things that are not seen until they happen…who can forget Read More >>

Ruger 77/44 44 Magnum

The rut has started, frost is on the pumpkin, and Deer Season for firearms is here in the Great Hoosier State.  For most Indiana hunters, that means it’s time to dust off their Mossberg 500 and switch their dove gun into a rifled slug thrower.  A few will carry their scoped in-line muzzleloader, hoping to stretch their long distance skills on that 200 yard buck in the next field.  The Hoosier Gun Guy will proudly be carrying a new issue Ruger 77/44 chambered in 44 magnum, composite stocked, stainless action and barrel, topped with a Millet DMS 1-4x 30mm illuminated reticle scope.  Read More >>

Have you ever considered teaching?

There are so many things I love about being a Firearms Instructor that I can’t cover them all. For me, one of the best is taking someone who is brand new and guiding them through their first couple trigger pulls and watching their smile form as the nerves settle and the fear goes away and they discover THIS IS FUN! If you are an experienced shooter, with a passion for shooting, you are a candidate.  Visit the NRA Instructor website and look for a Pistol Instructor Course, this is usually the entry into teaching.  This should include the Basic Instructor Training (BIT) which covers the Read More >>

Guns Don’t Kill People, People Kill People

Lethal Force

How often have we heard that expression?  But it is true?  Have you ever read a story about a gun loading itself, aiming and pulling its own trigger?  I haven’t, all the stories I’ve heard had human intervention.  I could, if I really wanted to which I don’t, kill someone with a 2x4 board, pencil, a knitting needle, my car…as easily as a gun.  It takes a deliberate action to pull the trigger and make the gun go bang.  Living an armed life means being a responsible citizen, someone who walks away when some jerk is trying to start something, someone who apologizes and steps back Read More >>
